after months of hard work, AKQA’s site for the new halo:ODST has gone live. the project spanned multiple countries (my flickr set from the hungary shoot), conquered many industry-first challenges (including smooth streaming within silverlight and as-yet unannounced partnerships), and exhibits very clean design in a really cool interface. i was able to operate many roles in this project from conception, to director, to DP, to motion designer. i’m extremely happy with how this one has turned out, and i hope you’ll like it, too.

gap’s “born to fit” facebook campaign went live recently. it was a huge opportunity for me to work in RED format and was the project which influenced my RED workflow post below. this was a fun project which involved many mattes, 3d modeling, flame work, and many hours of searching for perfect loop points. all in all, many lessons learned and a lot of work for something that looks extremely clean, simple, and fun. i hope you like it. the team put a lot of hard work into this one with multiple facebook executions, a huge interactive video piece, and an iphone app. check it out by clicking the image above.

i’m working on a project we shot a few weeks ago on RED and are building loopable assets for a site. i know that’s very general, but until the site goes live, that’s about all i can say. but, in working with 3 days worth of footage, over 80 separate video pieces of people (most of which need to interact with each other and all of which need to loop as seamless as possible), all clocking in around 670gb of footage, i’ve found there are many different workflows possible and i’m still trying to suss out the most effective.

to begin, we had made selects on-set, somewhat simplifying my initial workload of going through the footage to pull the best shots. to find the most effective loop points, i went through the footage in FCP working with the camera-generated 2k proxies. at this point, i would note the frame numbers of my in/out points and created a spreadsheet of these selects. additionally, i noted alternates as all our footage is going on the web and we will most likely need smaller renders that work over longer ones that look better.

the second phase of my process is where the possibilities of what path i choose really open up. do i color correct within FCP (or Color, for that matter) using the proxies and render those as assets for the developers? logically, this could work as our footage is going on the web. do i take the footage into AE and work with the R3D files directly? do i edit in adobe premiere and then take the .pproj into AE and finish up there? what i’ve chosen to do, so far (i’m still in the middle of production), is to take the in/out points i generated in FCP, go into RED ALERT! and do my CC on the original R3D file where i render out QTs at 1K, and finally take these into AE where i will do some minor post before handing off assets.

i’m merely pontificating here and maybe hoping someone will comment on their personal workflow with RED footage. going through reduser.net i notice many people are adamant about their workflows. i see so many options available that i’m almost inundated with the possibilities.

i was recently given the opportunity to be interviewed by the FWA. it was a great chance to examine one of my favorite terms - “the digital landscape” - and put out some comments. many thanks to the guys over at the FWA for the opportunity as well as their great sources of daily inspiration. also, it wouldn’t have been possible without the great projects i’ve worked on at AKQA over the past two and a half years.

AKQA comes through yet again with another industry-leading game experience. this was another site added to my growing list of projects i was extremely excited to be part of. seeing the intense back-end work put into assets like the galaxy explorer was a revelation. and watching the site build from a shell into this whole experience over the weeks of time put into it was a lesson of what it takes to get something like this built.as for the game, over the past four months or so, playing the dev kits for capturing assets, i built up my excitement for the release to a point where i just couldn’t think about it anymore. with something insane like 120 hours of gameplay inside mass effect, i was sure i’d never have the time to put into even playing it. as with any game in development, there were clipping errors, texturing issues, and static loading screens i had hoped would be worked on between development and release. either there was a rush in beating the holiday season, or maybe of just meeting one of the many push-back dates bioware set for release, but whatever it was, there are still many glaring errors in the gameplay. watching a character talk to your character while their skin textures build can be a bit disconcerting to the flow of believability. this game is without a doubt one of the predecessors to realistic texturing, which understandably takes intense system processes to render, but it’s still something i had hoped would be corrected before the game hit shelves. also, clipping continues to be a major issue for mass, with characters getting stuck in doors, their arms passing through walls, or the camera flying through surfaces. fight scenes can be unclear, hacking items like doors and computers has a horribly confusing interface, and conversations drag on and cannot be skipped. other than those issues…the game has a pretty good storyline, is a succesful RPG without seeming too nerdy, and looks promising for keeping me interested for at least half of its entire gameplay.

these displays were supposed to roll out into stores which sold microsoft vista back in december. all excited, i traveled to best buys across the country (ok, so it was only one in texas and three here in california) to find my motion graphics pieces in full-fledged glory.. all i ever saw was the video playing on laptops, and very slowly i might add. so, this is the first time i’ve seen the entire display, and only because we happen to have one here at the office.

according to macenstein, apple’s newest, as-yet-unreleased OSX, leopard, is already outselling both windows XP and vista.

OCEANSIDE, California (AP) — Five tattooed skulls stretch from Marine Cpl. Jeremy Slaton’s right elbow to his wrist, spelling out the word “Death.” He planned to add a tattoo spelling “Life” on his left arm, but that’s on hold because of a Marine policy taking effect Sunday.

The Marines are banning any new, extra-large tattoos below the elbow or the knee, saying such body art is harmful to the Corps’ spit-and-polish image.

Slaton and other grunts are not pleased.

“I guess I’ll get the other half later,” grumbled the 24-year-old leatherneck from Eden Prairie, Minnesota. “It’s kind of messed up.”

For many Marines, getting a tattoo is a rite of passage. They commonly get their forearms inscribed to remember fallen comrades, combat tours or loved ones, and often ask for exotic designs that incorporate the Marine motto, Semper Fi, or “Always faithful.”

Dozens of Marines from Camp Pendleton, the West Coast’s biggest Marine base, made last-minute trips to tattoo parlors in nearby Oceanside before the ban kicked in.

“This is something I love to do,” said Cpl. David Nadrchal, 20, of Pomona, who made an appointment to get an Iraqi flag and his deployment dates etched onto his lower leg. “The fact I can’t put something on my body that I want — it’s a big thing to tell me I can’t do that.”

Nadrchal said he is unsure whether he will re-enlist: “There’s all these little things. They are slowly chipping away at us.”

Marine Corps Commandant Gen. James T. Conway announced the policy change last week.

“Some Marines have taken the liberty of tattooing themselves to a point that is contrary to our professional demeanor and the high standards America has come to expect from us,” he said. “I believe tattoos of an excessive nature do not represent our traditional values.”

The ban is aimed primarily at “sleeve” tattoos, the large and often elaborate designs on the biceps and forearms of many Marines. Similar designs on the lower legs will be forbidden as well. So will very large tattoos on the upper arm, if they are visible when a Marine wears his workout T-shirt. Small, individual tattoos will still be allowed on the arms and legs. (The Marines already ban them on the hands.)

Marines already tattooed are exempt from the ban but cannot add to their designs. Anyone caught with fresh ink in the wrong place could be barred from re-enlistment or face disciplinary action. Getting a prohibited tattoo could constitute a violation of a lawful order, punishable by up to two years in prison and a dishonorable discharge, Marine spokesman 1st Lt. Brian Donnelly said.

Unit commanders must photograph and document sleeve tattoos to ensure Marines do not add to their ink.

The Marines and the other branches of the military already ban tattoos that could be offensive or disruptive, such as images that are sexist, vulgar, gang-related or extremist.

The Army, which has been doing most of the fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan and is struggling to fill its ranks, actually relaxed its tattoo restrictions last year. Soldiers can now get ink on the back of their hands and the lower back of the neck.

The Navy last year decreed that tattoos visible while in short-sleeve uniform cannot be larger than the wearer’s hand. The Air Force says tattoos should be covered up if they are bigger than one-quarter the size of the exposed body part.

Tattoo artist Jerry Layton at the Body Temple Tattoo Studio in Oceanside said he was booked up with Marines rushing to beat the deadline.

“These are guys that are dying in the war,” Layton said. “They can fight, but they can’t get a tattoo? It’s ridiculous.”

acording to the latest issue of details magazine (the issue with lance armstrong on the cover), democrats are increasingly more traditionally conservative than republicans in their policies and legislations. now that the dems control the house and senate, more powers are offered to them in passing conservative legislation. don’t believe me?

on cnn.com this morning was this story about new york democratic representative charles b. rangel, who wants to issue legislation requiring conscription (the draft). rep. rangel is already set to step into the position of chairman of the house ways and means committee and has stated he will funnel more money to his own state of new york. while defending the statement to the new york times, he offered up his opinion as example, using the state of mississippi: “Mississippi gets more than their fair share back in federal money, but who the hell wants to live in Mississippi?”

anyway, i decided to send a message to rep. rangel, voicing my displeasure in his proposed legislation.

To The Honorable Charles B. Rangel

Rep. Rangel,

My name is Jeremiah Wassom. I proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 1998-2006. I know you served in the Korea War, which is very impressive to me. I have the utmost respect for veterans of WWII, the Korea War, and Vietnam specifically for their extreme hardships and perserverance.

I am contacting you in reference to your proposed legislation on conscription because I believe you truly know how inefficient it would be at stopping future wars. Especially based solely on politicians’ fears of their children’s lives at stake. That alone, by the way, is a horrible reason to enforce conscription upon this nation. Our United States military is superior due to its voluntary service - those who serve WANT to serve, WANT to protect the traditions we protect, WANT to put our lives on the line for America and its inhabitants. A conscription legislation would put people directly on the lines who do not want to be there, who would do an inferior job, and who would, in effect, weaken the harder-than-steel links which make up our armed services.

As we are both veterans of combat, I assume you understand the intense reliance on trusting the members of your squad/platoon/fire team/etc. If I were forced to serve combat-time next to a conscripted person who was not in the correct mindset to effectively serve, I would be placing not only my own life on the line, but also the mission at hand. If you are truly concerned about the many losses of military men and women in Iraq now, your legislation would only increase such losses in future engagements. And, according to CNN, you are proposing this based on the possibility of future armed action in Iran, North Korea, and Iraq. Therefore, you are contradicting the possibility of this legislation actually making any effort at lessening politicians’ desire to put US lives at stake yet again.

Maybe there is some aspect of conscription you have not yet elucidated for the American public, but based upon everything I have seen of what you are proposing, I believe you are making a mistake of your position in politics and it has been many years since you have served. Please, for the sake of our honorable military and the safety of the United States, reconsider this legislation.

Thank you for your time and, most of all, thank you for your prior service in the military.

SEMPER FIDELIS
Cpl. Jeremiah Wassom, USMC
